Casco Antiguo, Casco Viejo, Panama
Casco Viejo is a special place within Panama for many reasons, one of them is that it gives you the opportunity to reach out and learn more about others. This month, we are celebrating the opening of Fundacion Mua Mua, located at Calle 4ta. Founded by Rosina Ynzenga (from Karavan in Casco Viejo) who has worked for years with Kuna women and her family has been involved deeply in the revitalization of Portobelo`s traditions, this foundation will be focused on dealing with a growing cultural phenomenon: kuna children who move to the city and forget their traditions.
The Kunas (one of Panama`s seven indian tribes) are one of the most visible groups in Panama City. In Casco Viejo you see them everywhere, selling their beautiful “molas”. As they move permanently to Panama City, many of their traditions are lost for their young ones, and this foundation has decided to open a space to help them re connect to their roots.
The space is small but yet full of intriguing objects and books. There is someone there to explain them to anyone who is curious, but their main goal is to serve as a school. If you are shopping at Calle 4ta by Papiro y Yo and Galeria Vida, you`ll see Fundacion Mua Mua. Don´t forget to drop by! And if you like their work, pass by Karavan on Calle 3era (in front of Arco Chato), and ask for Rosina.
