Atelier at Teatro Amador

Panama Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo You wouldn´t see it from the street, and yet it is one of the best restaurants in Casco Viejo.  To get to Atelier you have to go through the left door at Teatro Amador and go upstairs. And then, a beautiful surprise, a boutique style restaurant with what they`ve called “soul food”.  Run by Andrés Madrigal and his wife Valle,  Atelier has a fantastic ambiance and lovely food.  It also hosts events like cooking classes and workshops during the day. Here is their Facebook page to keep posted on what they have going on: ATELIER.

“Made in Casco Viejo”: old trades by new artisans

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo. Checking out old adds from Panama “way back when”, I had a to smile on the sort of items you would find in the stores. Mainly fabrics, oils, leather, lace and other primary goods. Other adds would be for shoemakers, tailors ,pharmacies that knew how to mix herbs , seamstresses that were able to make a wedding dress from scratch and keep her work discreet so her clients could boast they had brought the dress “from Europe”. It is true that our world has lost touch with those old trades. However, a new generation of … Continue reading

Easter Brunch: Must Haves

Panama Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo Painted eggs plus chocolate eggs plus cupcakes equals an afternoon packed with fun. We went to the American Trade Hotel for Easter Brunch and was absolutely delighted.  I think these two photos summarize it all:

Farm to Table: Donde José, Casco Viejo

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo I`m excited about Casco`s restaurants raising the bar in the City. Last week, Fish Market got featured in the magazine 9 -80, and the American Trade Restaurant opened doors featuring great stuff. This week I wanted to catch up and feature Donde José, a different type of restaurant that has just opened doors and is worth mentioning for many reasons. First, there is the food. You`d think talking about restaurants, this should always go first, but so many times it is not. I`m glad to report food is the whole point of it. José, a … Continue reading

Open! Restaurant at American Trade Hotel

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo This week, several things are happening around the Panama Jazz Fest. One of them is the opening of the American Trade Restaurant. We were there for the tastings and had a great time. Loved everything, but specially the chayote soup with chile poblano and the tuna.  The ambiance is terrific, your meal will have views to La Merced church and I think eventually they`ll open at Plaza Herrera.  My favorite house cocktail: Nebula . But if you are into vintage drinks, they`ve rescued a couple of recipes from old Colón (Caribbean side of Panama).  If … Continue reading

Casa Gongora: Casco`s new Café and Art Gallery

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo Casa Gongora is probably the only “100% Spanish Colonial” building (residential) in Casco Viejo. Located at the corner of 4th and Central, the house currently belongs to the government, but we are glad to announce that finally it has been given to the Olga Sinclair Foundation to run it. Downstairs, a lovely café offers lunch (delicious paella on Thursdays!) surrounded by art pieces from different local artists. Upstairs, a space for events and itinerary art shows. Right now, until October 14th, there is an interesting show of Panama`s Young Architects (JAP, in Spanish Jóvenes Arquitectos … Continue reading

New Café in Town: Dodó at Las Bovedas

Casco Viejo, Panama, Casco Antiguo I was after Miguel Lombardo for months… when? when?.. finally! here it is…. Right next to the French Embassy, there is a little, cute place that has just opened called Dodó. It is almost like the café equivalent of a secret garden, you have to dock in order to get in, but once you are there it is charming as it can be. Run by Marcela Lombardo, Miguel`s mom, she defines it as a place for light food: salads, sandwiches and desserts. But I already got feedback from some of Dodo`s first clients and they … Continue reading
