2015: The Year For Community

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo This is the week for 2015 predictions, so I went around asking a bit what people thought 2015 would bring both for Panama and for Casco. Since we are so focused on Casco, I reached out to my friend Kent Davis, from Panama Equity Real Estate, and he had an interesting view of the upcoming year: “We’re still seeing tons of interest from foreigners looking to move to Panama.  Some are lured by the strong economy, some are fleeing political instability, and others are just seeking a new lifestyle and a new adventure. I like … Continue reading

First office building in Casco Viejo: El Colegio

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo, Real Estate, Offices For years, we`ve been faced with the same situation: young entrepreneurs desperately looking for office space in Casco Viejo, only to end up in an apartment or expensive ground floor commercial locale.  For all of them, great news!  Casco Viejo is turning another milestone: its first Office Building. Welcome El Colegio. The property used to be the “María Inmaculada” school for women only (back then), therefore its name “El Colegio”.  The school later moved out of Casco and now the building is being restored into cool offices using the original floors and … Continue reading

Pre Construction Projects for 2014 – Calle 6ta

Panama Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo This year is starting with really interesting projects on pre sales. We`ll feature one by one, starting with Casa Boyd, a project at Calle 6ta with a young vibe and a spacious offer. Only two apartments and one commercial space. The building is a modern, concrete building, with high ceilings and a great sense of space.  We like both apartments as they fit very well into Casconian`s lifestyles: one is a loft one bedroom (Apartment No. 2 ) and the other one is a 1.5 bedrooms (Apartment No. 1), which means you have a second … Continue reading

Last Sin! The Type A Syndrome

Casco Viejo Panama Casco Antiguo The first time I heard the “I`m a Type A” phrase, was from a New Yorker. I thought he was talking about blood types, and it did take some time to my friend to be able to describe it to me.  Please note: description (even a full description which included hand signals) does not ensure comprehension. I felt like all of a sudden we were both using the same language but absolutely worlds apart. Pluto and Saturn colliding, no wonder: he was from New York, I`m from Panama. My brain squeezed while my whole being … Continue reading

Sin No.3: Inexperience & Rocks Falling From The Sky

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo In order to develop buildings in Casco Antiguo you have to have previous experience in some sort of field related to building.  This is an activity that should be labeled: “Not For The Faint Of Heart”. Either you know what your doing and therefore you have a realistic approach to your dream, or you are a very curious mind, a hands on personality packed with passion and willing to roll up your sleeves and dig in head first researching and sweating it with a smile.  I`ve seen both cases, and they both work out well. … Continue reading

Sin No. 2: A Cold Heart

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo I`m sure some poet must have said it at some point, somewhere: inexperience can be excused, but never lack of passion. “You shall not develop your historic building using only excel”. While excel is necessary to understand profitability, this 300 year old site holds buildings that are loaded with a character of their own. They want to tell you their stories, they want you to bring them back. They were made with noble materials and at a human scale that related to people back then and now. They don´t know nor care about excel. They … Continue reading

Deadly Sin No. 1: Acedia

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo When compiling common denominators on why some developments have failed, I came across this word: Acedia, which is mentioned in Wikipedia`s Seven Deadly Sins article, under “historical sins”. With such a name and classification, I had to start with that one! Although I must say there is another one that I consider the biggest one of them all. I`ll save that one for last, as it embodies so much. But let`s start with “Acedia”. Several definitions on it, but the “historical sin” refers to the “neglect to do something that one should do”. And the … Continue reading
