Historic photos are always fun!

Panama Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo Historic photos are always so much fun! when you know the area, they are always interesting. These I bumped into the office of a friend who said that clients loved them. I was surprised by the beauty of the balconies of the buildings towards Plaza 5 de Mayo. If you notice, they are very much like the ones in Colón, where the arches extended over the sidewalk, offering shade and protection from the rain. So needed in this tropical environment. Apparently, a number of these buildings used to be this way, but they were cut … Continue reading

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo For third year in a row, the architectural firm Hache Uve has won a Premio Magna given by the Panamanian Architecture and Engineer Association. This time, the awarded building was Casa Vidal, a residential project located at 1st Street in San Felipe, Casco Viejo.  Congratulations to everyone involved! restoring a building in Casco is not a one man show. Amazing model of Casco Viejo shown at University of Panama

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo Dom Cartooch is a French artist who lived in Casco for years.  At some point I saw him roaming around with a meassuring tape and students sometimes with him, and I wasn´t really sure what he was up to other than modeling some buildings.  But it wasn´t just “some buildings”… it was the entire historic site of Casco Antiguo! What an amazing task! This week, the 9 mt x 6 mt model is being shown at the University of Panama, Architecture Faculty. The project was done together with Peruvian Erasmo Benoutte and will be at … Continue reading

San Felipe Neri Church Open To The Public

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo One of my favorite churches in Casco Viejo, the San Felipe Neri church is open (finally!) to the public.  From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. you`ll be able to go in and experience the beauty of its intimate ambiance.  Built in 1688 it has so far 325 years. Take a look at the altar, but specially the chorus at the back of the church. Each part of this church has a story to tell,  specially those buried inside (so be careful where you step!).  Graves dating from 1850`s and probably before, people who lived through … Continue reading

Casa Gongora: Casco`s new Café and Art Gallery

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo Casa Gongora is probably the only “100% Spanish Colonial” building (residential) in Casco Viejo. Located at the corner of 4th and Central, the house currently belongs to the government, but we are glad to announce that finally it has been given to the Olga Sinclair Foundation to run it. Downstairs, a lovely café offers lunch (delicious paella on Thursdays!) surrounded by art pieces from different local artists. Upstairs, a space for events and itinerary art shows. Right now, until October 14th, there is an interesting show of Panama`s Young Architects (JAP, in Spanish Jóvenes Arquitectos … Continue reading

Beautiful night photo of Casco Viejo

Panama Casco Viejo – Casco Antiguo Cameras are amazing, check out this shot I took with this new camera that I got (thanks family!) for my birthday.  Photographer Ken Milburn gave me some tips, as I was totally lost with the new set of buttons. Paid off! still, can´t say I did it, this was all “Sony”. But I`m glad it captured a great full moon set, the peace you feel at night at Las Bovedas is beautiful.

Beautiful doors and windows of Casco Viejo

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo I meant to post these photos a while ago and somehow it fell through the cracks. But good that I looked and found them! beautiful architectonic details of doors and windows, different styles… but all in Casco Viejo!

Italians in Casco Viejo, Panama

Panama, Casco Antiguo, Casco Viejo Last June 2nd, Italy celebrated their anniversary as a Republic.  You might not be aware of this, but many of the main buildings in Casco Viejo were designed by Genaro Ruggieri, an Italian who back in 1908 gave us some of our main landmarks such as the National Theatre, the National Palace and the Municipal Palace.  Those were the days where Panama was being built (literally) as a new Republic (our independence was in 1903).  The National Theater, for example, at some point even served as a meeting place for the National Assemble, as there … Continue reading
