Benissimo Gelato & Caffe comes to Ave A

Friday night was the official  opening for Benissimo Gelato & Caffe on the  corner of Avenida A and Calle 4.   After one taste, the coconut became an instant favorite. Bits of coconut are there down to the last lick.  Besides gelato, choose from their bacon mozzarella waffle or waffle with nutella con banano accompanied by  a cappuccino.  On Saturday, I dropped in for a panini de pavo as more than 100 assorted motorcycles roared through the Casco. Stop by, introduce yourself to Jose Manuel and his staff.

Beatlemania tomorrow in Danilo Perez Jazz Club

Beatlemania tomorrow in Danilo Perez Jazz Club, just like the love craze born in 1963 for everything Beatles related. Dust off your memories and sharpen up your knowledge because there won’t only be music, there will be trivia.

That’s how they roll!

Sundays are definitely a wonderful day to take a leisure ride! But instead of hopping in the car and burning your gas, take a nice bike ride to Casco!  By chance, this Sunday I ran into some friends whose hobby is bicycle riding. So they routinely ride their bikes with their whole family from Paitilla to Casco on Sundays. They told me that a lot of people like doing that because they can park their bikes at Unido where there’s a trusty bike rack (see picture), and then have a coffee inside. Afterwards they spend their Sunday walking around Casco. … Continue reading

Patriot Parades

Panama Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo Highlights of the Patriot Holiday parades on November 3rd and 4th. Enjoy!

Diablo Rosso Amanaplanacanal

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo Until mid June, Diablo Rosso at Calle 6ta will be showing Amanaplanacanal, Luis Camnitzer`s art piece about the Canal.  Beautiful bronze plaques with history and photographs are artistically arranged,  giving you a sense of continuity but also of zen beauty.  Each plaque is a miniature work of art on its own.  Can´t stop thinking about how humble and efficient each plaque looks, as opposed to the overwhelming experience of size and the undertaking of the real Panama Canal itself. Go check it out!

Italians in Casco Viejo, Panama

Panama, Casco Antiguo, Casco Viejo Last June 2nd, Italy celebrated their anniversary as a Republic.  You might not be aware of this, but many of the main buildings in Casco Viejo were designed by Genaro Ruggieri, an Italian who back in 1908 gave us some of our main landmarks such as the National Theatre, the National Palace and the Municipal Palace.  Those were the days where Panama was being built (literally) as a new Republic (our independence was in 1903).  The National Theater, for example, at some point even served as a meeting place for the National Assemble, as there … Continue reading

Walka…what?

Panama Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo Walkability! try saying it loud several times together, it can be tricky! but the concept is quite simple: how walkable is the place/neighborhood/ community you live in.  This simple fact happens to add and keep value in your real estate. And we are not talking only about Casco Viejo, one of the few places in Panama City where you can walk everywhere, but in walkable places around the world. Check out this interesting article about walkability and real estate prices! Want to add research over research? I was just reading the last National Geographic magazine, … Continue reading

Celebrating the Chinese Community in Panama

Casco Viejo, Panama, Casco Antiguo Last night, Panama`s Chinese community gathered at the Endara Museum in Casco Viejo to celebrate the roots of their arrival in Panama, more than a hundred years ago. Specifically, 123 years! The museum featured beautiful photos of the early waves that came in the “Sea Witch” a boat that arrived with 705 Chinese men and women.  Also photos from their activities, their participation in Panama`s first carnivals and in commerce, of course. I personally enjoyed very much to see how the room was filled with a kaleidoscopic combination of dozens of descendants of those early … Continue reading
