Sembrarte and Camp Wandu in Casco Viejo

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo When Frank Ferrer from Sembrarte called me that he had a group of kids to re do Santa Familia`s mural, I could not imagine the injection of cuteness I was about to get.  This activity was in partnership with Camp Wandu, and the first day the group was all five years old or less (is there an age we should name “cupcake size age”?). As we say in Spanish: chiquititos and simply adorable. Very serious, receiving instructions and the whole thing. As you can see in the photo, they divided the mural into different “areas … Continue reading

The Swedish Legacy of Frederick Ljungstrom in Casco Viejo

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo By 9th street there is a big ruin that everyone knows as the old power plant that used to belong to “Fuerza y Luz”. This power plant, back in the day, had turbines and cooling pipes into the ocean, today turned into a mangrove. I remember pulling out old receipts from my grandfather, “Fuerza y Luz” slogans were all about promoting the consumption of electricity… oh my! how much times have changed. What I didn´t know, and a friend called it to my attention yesterday, was that the turbines in this historic plant was maybe … Continue reading

Pro Pet Adoption Event This Sunday

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo We all hate to see abandoned animals in the street (or mistreated ones). In Casco, we`ve been lucky to have a community that cares about street dogs and cats. So many take on feeding, adopting and bringing organizations like Spay Panama to town. On Sunday, El Cuarto Rojo will be fundraising for an ngo called Mundo Colitas, a non profit group that promotes adoption and helps pets all around Panama find new homes. How it works? you sign up for a class that Sunday (only $5) and all proceeds will go to Mundo Colitas. Email … Continue reading

Panama Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo You wouldn´t see it from the street, and yet it is one of the best restaurants in Casco Viejo.  To get to Atelier you have to go through the left door at Teatro Amador and go upstairs. And then, a beautiful surprise, a boutique style restaurant with what they`ve called “soul food”.  Run by Andrés Madrigal and his wife Valle,  Atelier has a fantastic ambiance and lovely food.  It also hosts events like cooking classes and workshops during the day. Football Fever! Casco Viejo`s own World Cup

Panama Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo In preparation to the “World Cup Fever”, Casco Viejo held it`s own mini version of the games this past weekend. Kids from every age gathered at Calle 4ta and played until sundown.  I`m sure Panama (and Casco) will be pretty much paralyzed tomorrow around 3 p.m. to see the opening, and many of the restaurants are preparing their flat screens to show the games. Where? Tántalo, Sitio del Casco, Cedros and Ko-koo (at Plaza Catedral) for sure. But I bet Calle 2nda and Calle 5ta will have their TV sets out on the street,  usually … Continue reading
