UnderCover Boots opened in Casco Viejo

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo Shopping in Avenida A is getting better and better. This week, UnderCover Boots inaugurated a beautiful space, between Madrigal and Lupa. The place was packed with neighbors, children, everyone. A beautiful store, great products. Colorful rainboots for everyone (and right on time for Panama´s rainy season!) painted or created by local artists. Of course, I was already wearing them going in… mine had the “papo” flower, but I really loved the “guayacan” long boots and the Rana Dorada elegant black. Depending on the boot you buy, they donate to different organizations, including the Smithonian frog … Continue reading

Cancer Awareness Event at Papiro y Yo

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo Last night we were at a beautiful event by Zaira and Ana at Papiro y yo / Franklin Panamá: a Yo Lucho (I fight) event pro Panama´s Cancer Association. A wonderful night full of laughter and beautiful, hand made merchandise that makes a difference no matter which day of the year you buy it. Last night it helped both cancer and the amazing ladies at Panama´s country side who create them. Good business, good people, good causes.  That´s my kind of shopping!

Panama`s cuisine featured at New York Times

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo We`ve often mentioned that Panama`s strongest feature is diversity. Geographically, biologically and culturally. This is finally showing in an exciting new Panamanian cuisine, where young chefs are doing what they do best: research, discover, mix, create, re discover. This week, the New York Times took notice! here is the article: In Panama City, Mixing Global and Local Flavors

Recycling art, urbanism and fashion

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo There was a lot happening this weekend, I`m sorry I couldn´t go to everything. From what I did manage to get to, here were my top picks: The urbanism talk at American Trade Hotel on how social housing can regenerate societies.  I was glad to learn that there are several ongoing projects in Panama trying to apply the concepts discussed in the talk. All based on human scale, not on “car scale”. As in our beloved Casco! The recycling art at MACRO. Yes, everyone came for the fashion, I came for the garbage… Really loved … Continue reading

El Chorrillo City Tour: Panama`s history & Popular Culture

Panama Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo A couple of weeks ago I joined Felix McFresh and his friend Alberto on an interesting city tour of Chorrillo. These two “chorrilleros” are passionate about their neighborhood and the special things that can only be found there as part of our historic and cultural heritage. Chorrillo is known today as a low income town, which has struggled all its life. While this might be so, it is also true that  Chorrillo has an intimate connection with Panama`s history and that there is plenty of good stuff to see and learn. The neighborhood was known … Continue reading

Generation Peace Academy works with AVACA`s Casco Recicla Program

Panama Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo During 2012, a group of Generation Peace Academy volunteers came to Casco Viejo to work with Casco`s neighborhood Association (AVACA) in an  important awareness program about garbage disposal and direct street intervention.  This year, they joined hands again to work on recycling, the natural next step. For the first time ever, a survey of how much recycling material is being produced at restaurants is being made. Additionally, GPA volunteers are working with children from the community (Aprojusan) doing beach cleanings and building an herbs garden that will help local restaurants to have native species grown … Continue reading
