Banistmo opens in Casco Viejo

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo A number of years, Arco surveyed among the neighbors what type of businesses they needed the most. Among them were: a pharmacy, a grocery store, a bank. Step by step, we´ve been bringing them to the neighborhood.  Not always an easy task! That is why we would like to celebrate today another historic landmark: Casco´s first bank in San Felipe. I don´t think the town had one since the 70´s. Banistmo opened this week at Casa Lewis, Plaza Herrera, corner of 9th and A Avenue. They´ll be open from Monday to Friday (9:30 a.m. to … Continue reading

Cacique Cruiser, Casco Viejo. Adventures in Panama!

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo A few years ago, we took one of Cacique´s trips. It was to the Bayano Caves and we simply loved it. This week, we have visitors in town, but being an ultra busy week we just didn´t have time to arrange activities. A phone call to our friends at Cacique Cruiser, and off they went to San Blas and more! That´s what I love about living in Casco, everything is so compact. Our guests woke up early and simply walked down the street to meet the guides. We went off to our daily chores, looking … Continue reading

Made in Casco: Beer

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo Just before the ramp that takes you into San Felipe, you`ll see a small pub at the bottom: La Rana Dorada, Casco`s small beer factory. Different flavors and textures, the master brewers and clients at Rana have fun and their product is famous in Panama City. They are also hosts of the Rana Dorada festival, which is organized by a group of scientists at Smithsonian who are studying Panama`s unique Golden Frog. Here is their Facebook page: HERE

Florist in Casco Viejo

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo Did you know there is a florist in Casco Viejo? we visited her store in Calle 12 and A Avenue last week with a group we were touring. I enjoy Calle 12 a lot because it has several of those old trades: there is at least one shoe guy, two tailors and the florist.  The name of the shop is La Decorativa, and you can make your orders by email or cellphone. They have done several events for Hotel Ejecutivo, a corporate hotel out of Casco, including small corporate meetings and even weddings.  Contact them … Continue reading

Passport to Casco Viejo, Panama

Yes, you read correctly, no need to adjust your screen: Casco Viejo has finally managed to get its own passport! For me as a Panamanian is extremely funny, because being such a small country we do have a separatist province called Chiriquí. There, the “claim” for a new country has translated into the funniest merchandise ever, which of course includes their own “Chiriquí Passport”, their flag and so on.  For the longest time I`ve repressed thoughts of Casco doing the same, but not anymore! From now on, I declare myself Casco-Centric (not that you wouldn´t have noticed that before in … Continue reading
