Casco Life

Investors in Panama: Casco Viejo, Good News!

Back in the day, Hotel Central used to be one of the most elegant hotels in Casco Antiguo. This beautiful building dominates Plaza Catedral, occupying almost half of a block. As Casco Viejo had it´s ups and downs, the hotel slowly lost it´s chic clientele and was thrown into oblivion for the last 20 years (or more!).  Back in 1995 you could get a room there for $8 a night.

I visited several times during 1995/96. At that time, it was barely operating, later on it was shut down and put on the market for sale. Although run down and forgotten, it never lost it´s charm. Stepping inside that old style lobby opening to a wide foyer (full 4 story ceiling height) was quite an experince.  The wooden balconies overlooking the lobby, the wood furniture at the reception and the misterious map carved on the wall with fading blue and green colors all over it. You could almost see the ghosts of gentlemen walking around on white tuxedos and smoking cigars, taking their hats off to salute ladies with long skirts and umbrellas getting ready for a stroll.

On the ground level it had a couple of commercial spaces and an original iron door elevator (European style). Most rooms had to use the common bathroom facilites, but the suites were luxurious… they had their own bathroom inside the room! a brand new concept. Going up the stairs you reached the roof terrace. Beautiful views from the back, but unexpected treasures could be found: there where thousands of original roof tiles just dropped there to rot. Back then, each tile was different, each one had an embossed seal from the company that made it. Each one unique. Some where in the shape of bees, others with the names of the makers.

Finally, this year, a hotel brand got hold of it and has started to restore. The site looks like a war zone right now, but just like plastic surgery, it always looks bad before looking good again! Hotels are the key to Casco Antiguo. They create a center of gravity that the neighborhood needs in order to develop commercial life and create value.

Now, more good news: not only one but four sites are about to develop within the next 5 years. Can´t think of a better time and place to either  live ore invest in Casco Viejo!

In the article below you´ll see some information on the project and some pictures taken today while I was walking around. This came out today on a local newspaper: La Estrella de Panama. Enjoy!
