Colonial Religious Art Museum, Casco Viejo

Panama Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo When visiting the Arco Chato you now can visit the Colonial Religious Art museum. This is where the 700 year old bell from La Merced went after being taken down from the church during the restoration. It is next to other similar bells from around the country. The museum tells the story of Panama´s religious art history, the symbolism crafted in the altars and the story behind the paintings, sculptures and ornaments.

Rainy season is here! Weekend photos

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo Raining like crazy, finally. Panama gets so hot just before the rainy season starts, I´m glad to see big, thick  drops of water falling from the sky, clearing everything up, reminding us the natural cycle that allows us to have such a lush rainforest and splendid biodiversity. One more week of just “waiting” and I think we would have turned into popcorn. Maybe steamed rice would be a better comparison. No Yin without Yang! Good time to post photos! here are some from this weekend´s race Ruta de las Plazas and from San Felipe´s patron … Continue reading

Baluarte de Jesus or Mano de Tigre

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo Everyday I learn something new. Today La Prensa published an article about one of the few pieces of the colonial wall we all know as Mano de Tigre. Initially it was known as Baluarte de Jesús and was part of a system of walls to repel the enemy that was supposed to come by land (crossing from the Caribbean).  It could hold up to 25 cannons. Once the walls where not useful anymore and the city needed to grow, the city authorized its destruction (11 of October 1856). This piece was “saved” because the land … Continue reading

Sushi at Casco: Welcome Aki

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo Yesterday we had a great time at AKI, Casco´s new sushi restaurant. Owner Brittany Morgan is known in Bocas del Toro for her restaurant RAW Fusion. Now, she moved to Casco and AKI looks great.  Intimate and with delicious food.   I loved the Totoro posters! Others will love the light sake sangria. I didn´t have time to take photos to the dishes, ate them right away! Here is Britanny´s Facebook.

Jane Jacobs Walks in Casco Viejo: Reconnecting with our City

Panama Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo Jane Jacobs was an activist that back in the 60´s opposed big projects like highways that would divide and destroy the fabric of small, walkable, neighborhoods. Even though she had no formal trainning as an urbanist, she had common sense. She empowered people and saved areas that today wouldn´t exist without her leadership: places like Soho and others. This Saturday, May 23rd, the city of Panama will be carrying out what has been known as Jane´s Walks. We are very excited that the City has started to take this approach.  The tour will start at … Continue reading

Dinning at Enotria

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo Last night, after visiting Michael Sager´s art show at Las Bovedas, we went to Enotria for dinner. Loved throwing myself on the couch after such a long (and productive!) day.  Their staff was wonderful and recommended a nice wine from Sardinia to finish the day. We tried their menu: my husband ordered the tuna and I ordered the lasagna with prawns and zucchini. We shared a crepe with cheese and berries as dessert. Did I say share? on second thought… i don´t think I did… Fully recommended! Tel. 388-3237 Facebook Page HERE

Origami classes on Sunday in Casco Viejo

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo I really feel origami is a type of yoga. You need to concentrate, breathe, follow instructions. And if you do, then something beautiful comes out of it. For those who do it a lot, they often claim achieving a sense of bliss, of zen. Now, in Casco, our neighbor Amami Monesson is teaching this beautiful art. Every Sunday, at her place! Her goal is to make 2000 origami cranes and do an exhibition. You can email her at:  You can come and join her sessions any time between 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Location; … Continue reading
