Love my Casco Weekends: Beach cleanings, dance festivals, awesome food.

Panama Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo This is what happens when you live in Casco Viejo and are plugged into all the community ngo`s that work here: Saturday morning: beach cleaning! help gather material to build a fantastic Christmas Tree with volunteers from the Casco Viejo neighborhood association (AVACA) while helping the environment. Do good in no time: 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. The fun continues: run home, get changed and ready for brunch at the American Trade Hall for a family event.  Really nice food, after the beach cleaning, my body welcomes all the calories, including gummy bears. Go home, … Continue reading

Villa Palma, Casco Viejo

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo I`ts been under construction forever, and just a few months ago they started opening their doors as in a soft opening.  We decided to go try their restaurant, so went for lunch. What a pleasant surprise! Their octopus appetizer was a full meal, and a delicious one.  We tried also their soup, excellent.  We couldn´t visit the rooms as they were still undergoing changes, but the manager said they will try and be open for high season.

Events! October, November… Casco Viejo

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo Tonight is the inauguration of the PRISMA Dance Festival at the National Theater at 8 p.m.  But also, more stuff is coming! I`m so glad that there is finally a newsletter from the Institute of Culture with the upcoming calendar… congratulations! Oct 31st: Hamlet at the National Theater. Brought by the British Embassy, all proceeds to support FAE Theater festival. Nov 17th to 23rd: Antique Music Festival: music by the original instruments including flutes, baroque guitars reproducing what must have been the first melodies that came to America during the conquest.

Progress: A Draft – Artshow

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo Curated by our friend and neighbor Ramón Zafrani (alias Monchi), this artshow is at Casa Soldado, run by the Spanish Agency of Cooperation.  The show is small but deep: the eternal questions of identity and what progress means dealt with beauty and humor. I particularly liked the pieces by Pilar, which reminded me of those Facebook posts where someone jokes about “what your friends think you do, what your mother thinks you do, what you think you do, what you actually do”.  Can´t miss it!

Casa Vidal wins SPIA 2014 Award

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo Casa Vidal, a Conservatorio S.A. project, won the SPIA (Panama`s architect and engineer society) award for the Architectural Restoration category.  The award was given to the architectural firm Hache Uve, specialists in historic restorations in Casco Viejo. As we have mentioned before, getting anything built in Casco takes team effort. To everyone involved, from design to project management, big congratulations!

Rap Poetry, Classic Poetry, Street Poetry

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo Friday night we had a lovely time at Diablo Rosso`s Poetry Jam. The place was packed, and different people read or performed their poems in different styles. From rap to street to a more classic rhythm,  from serious to funny,  it was a wonderful night I hope it gets its way through Diablo`s weekly programming. Plus: great food!!!

Tonight! Poetry Jam at Diablo Rosso

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo I`m a big fan of poetry jam. I`ve always said that one of the differences between poetry in English and poetry in Spanish, is that the first one was meant to be spoken, as in a conversation, while the second one was meant to be printed and read only in the depths of your mind. I don´t know why I feel this way, but I do, and I`ve tested several great poets to the test! However, watching Youtube videos on Poetry Jam session in Spain I found amazing stuff in Spanish, so maybe what is … Continue reading
