Made in Casco: Beer

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo Just before the ramp that takes you into San Felipe, you`ll see a small pub at the bottom: La Rana Dorada, Casco`s small beer factory. Different flavors and textures, the master brewers and clients at Rana have fun and their product is famous in Panama City. They are also hosts of the Rana Dorada festival, which is organized by a group of scientists at Smithsonian who are studying Panama`s unique Golden Frog. Here is their Facebook page: HERE

Made in Casco: Mitchelle Quiñones

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo I`m liking this “Made in Casco” concept every day more. It is allowing me to see this neighborhood differently and discovering cool stuff. For years,  I had seen neighbor Mitchelle Quiñones with the most interesting jewelry on her. Never asked where she got it, until this past week when she told me she had a workshop in Casco and was producing her own line from there. Fantastic! She has her own Facebook Page and is starting to promote her brand. Check it out! Photos by Jorge Duarte

TEDx Panama City at Teatro Amador

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo I couldn´t believe it. I was in a line (and a long one!) to get into Teatro Amador. But it wasn´t the latest concert of the latest celebrity. We were all there to assist to TEDx Panama City, and the conversation was to be about culture and identity. We had a blast. From the bizarre to the concrete, speakers brought a broad spectrum, but everything related to education, cultural manifestations, cultural projects, cultural reflections and meditations.  It closed with Panamanian saxophonist Yahaziel Arrocha playing his own interpretation of Suspiros de una Fea and with spoken … Continue reading

“Made in Casco Viejo”: old trades by new artisans

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo. Checking out old adds from Panama “way back when”, I had a to smile on the sort of items you would find in the stores. Mainly fabrics, oils, leather, lace and other primary goods. Other adds would be for shoemakers, tailors ,pharmacies that knew how to mix herbs , seamstresses that were able to make a wedding dress from scratch and keep her work discreet so her clients could boast they had brought the dress “from Europe”. It is true that our world has lost touch with those old trades. However, a new generation of … Continue reading

Strength & Hope: Casco`s History Told Differently

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo Hope, but specially change need effort. You need strength to pull it off, specially if your calling in life is to be an entrepreneur. And this is the path ex Casco Viejo gang “Ciudad de Dios” has taken.
