Carnivals are here!

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo And the whole country goes into a hiatus, nothing gets done, and we are proud of it. Time to celebrate and wear strange costumes. But my favorite new tradition is the children`s carnival at Casco Viejo, which will start today at 2:30 p.m. in Santa Familia, 4th Street.   Can´t wait to sack race and run holding a spoon in my mouth with a lime on top. Wait a minute… wasn´t that for children? hummm…

First office building in Casco Viejo: El Colegio

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo, Real Estate, Offices For years, we`ve been faced with the same situation: young entrepreneurs desperately looking for office space in Casco Viejo, only to end up in an apartment or expensive ground floor commercial locale.  For all of them, great news!  Casco Viejo is turning another milestone: its first Office Building. Welcome El Colegio. The property used to be the “María Inmaculada” school for women only (back then), therefore its name “El Colegio”.  The school later moved out of Casco and now the building is being restored into cool offices using the original floors and … Continue reading

El Chorrillo City Tour: Panama`s history & Popular Culture

Panama Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo A couple of weeks ago I joined Felix McFresh and his friend Alberto on an interesting city tour of Chorrillo. These two “chorrilleros” are passionate about their neighborhood and the special things that can only be found there as part of our historic and cultural heritage. Chorrillo is known today as a low income town, which has struggled all its life. While this might be so, it is also true that  Chorrillo has an intimate connection with Panama`s history and that there is plenty of good stuff to see and learn. The neighborhood was known … Continue reading

New Art Space in Casco Viejo

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo People keep opening spaces to art in Casco Viejo, this time by Miguel Lombardo, right on top of Dodo at Las Bovedas in Plaza Francia. Welcome “Casasola”! The space is featuring right now two art projects, one called “Ferretería Internacional” and the other one re creates an old style pharmacy. For Ferretería, the artist took furniture from an old hardware store and re created furniture almost like a sculpture. The specific hardware store he was re creating actually existed, and he got original pieces from the family who still owned a bunch of stuff. The … Continue reading

“Felt Part of the Neighborhood”, French Ambassador on Casco Viejo

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo The life of a diplomat is to travel every four years (or less, depending on the country) from country to country, spreading good will on each one. Their range of experiences on places to live and work is enormous. Today, at La Prensa, there was a note about French Ambassador Hugues Goisbault leaving soon, but not before praising his lifestyle in Casco Viejo. According to the note, he will have “strong memories” from Casco Viejo, where he “felt part of the neighborhood, protected”.  He recalled fondly how children in the plaza knew him, and how … Continue reading

Panama Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo During 2012, a group of Generation Peace Academy volunteers came to Casco Viejo to work with Casco`s neighborhood Association (AVACA) in an  important awareness program about garbage disposal and direct street intervention.  This year, they joined hands again to work on recycling, the natural next step. For the first time ever, a survey of how much recycling material is being produced at restaurants is being made.
