Metro Bus: From and To Casco Viejo

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo Someone approached me the other day about the Metro Bus, if it reached Casco and how to use it. I was confused myself on how to go about it, since they have changed routes and where to get the card, so what I did was to ride it last Sunday and here are my notes on it: CARD: I found myself asking everywhere for one, and no one sold it.  The nearest posts I could verify are: at Plaza 5 de Mayo (the sidewalk next to the old train station) and the stop they call … Continue reading

New Store in Casco Viejo! Welcome “Digna y Benito”

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo I went all hyper yesterday at “Digna y Benito”, calle 4ta`s new store in front of Papyro y Yo. The reason? well, it just has beautiful stuff! I used the classic excuse of needing to buy something special for a friend… to buy stuff for me… jejejeje…. The unusual name ties up because of the store`s concept: both “Digno” and “Benita” are common names in Panama`s countryside, specially from the Azuero arch where most of the traditional clothing such as polleras are made. The owners of the store have been working with women from this … Continue reading

Business Women Meet at Esquina Photo

Panama, Casco Antiguo One of the things I love about Casco is that its community is always opening spaces to meet, mingle and share. That was the occasion when a couple of weeks ago, Esquina Photo along with Ahden Busch organized a get together for “Casco`s business women”.  Although I knew many of the girls attending, I did meet new people and loved how different country flags keep adding to Casco Viejo`s neighborhood.  From Panama, Spain, USA, Italy, Jamaica (and I`m probably forgetting a few more), we shared common interests, wine and cheese. Congratulations to Ingrid Moore and Ahden Busch … Continue reading

A Dying Trade Kept Alive

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo Yesterday, while doing my home shores, I heard a distinctive flute playing from down the street.  I recognized it from my childhood, and I ran down to meet the guy, probably the last one in Panama in his trade. I bet I was the only one in the neighborhood who even knew what the meaning of the flute was. Mr. Enzo is an Argentinian who has been in Panama for more than 30 years. His trade is a dying one in this era of easy “buy and throw away”. He sharpens. Knives, scissors, machetes, electric … Continue reading

Casa del Horno Apartments For Sale in Casco Viejo

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo If you`ve been looking for luxury apartments in Casco Viejo, you might be very interested in what Casa del Horno has to offer. This building, restored a couple of years ago, opened as a high end hotel at B Avenue, gaining wonderful comments and reviews immediately. The building has a beautiful old world feeling, as most of its structure is made of colonial calicanto wall, but blending in a smart way with contemporary interior design. The hotel group has now opened a second hotel (Casa Nuratti) and are offering the apartments in Casa del Horno … Continue reading

MusicArte in Casco Viejo

Panama Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo I was researching the other day different festivals that have established themselves as annual attractions in Casco Viejo.  I knew there were several, but boy we have a full calendar! from the Panama Jazz Festival in January, to the FAE Theater Festival and even the International Film Festival, I think my next posting will be all the cool annual stuff that takes place in Casco so you can plan ahead. But today I learned about MusicArte, an event that gather musicians from the States and Panama, and not only they do concerts together, but also … Continue reading

Diablo Rosso Amanaplanacanal

Panama, Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo Until mid June, Diablo Rosso at Calle 6ta will be showing Amanaplanacanal, Luis Camnitzer`s art piece about the Canal.  Beautiful bronze plaques with history and photographs are artistically arranged,  giving you a sense of continuity but also of zen beauty.  Each plaque is a miniature work of art on its own.  Can´t stop thinking about how humble and efficient each plaque looks, as opposed to the overwhelming experience of size and the undertaking of the real Panama Canal itself. Go check it out!
