Panama and USA Entry Trade Promotion Agreement

Panama, Casco Antiguo, Casco Viejo Big news today in Panama, day No. 1 of the new Trade Promotion Agreement with the United States.  As in many international agreements, its effects will be measured in the long term.  On the short term, Panama seems to be looking forward to lowering its food costs and welcoming American businesses.  According to an article in La Prensa today, the Panamanian government is trying to promote Panama as a logistic port connecting to countries in Central and South America. According to the US Embassy website, this agreement is: “U.S.-Panama FTA is a comprehensive free trade … Continue reading

Award winning… Casco Viejo!

Panama, Casco Viejo I opened the newspaper this past week and Casco came coming up again and again as the interesting place to be: it was the perfect backdrop for award winning photos (Carlos Endara Awards) and the place with the best restaurants and cafes of Panama City (Guide to Good Eating 2012). I know sometimes I am like a crazy “stage mom” for Casco… but you know, it is cool to “have a kid with talents”!!! =) Here are the seven Casco Viejo restaurants where part of the best list (total of 35, from 200 chosen for the guide): … Continue reading

Beautiful and interesting night at Casco Viejo

Panama, Casco Viejo Last night we went to the PRISMA Dance Festival at the Anita Villalaz. The show included performances by dance groups from Argentina, Mexico and USA. The informal ambiance of the Anita Villalaz brought in the perfect intimacy for beautiful experimental pieces about fear, angst for the unknown and the bizarre relationship dynamics we can get into. I highly recommend it! So what is coming up on PRISMA? Tonight! National Theater: the Brazilian troupe Quasar Cia de Danza with “Cielo en la boca”. Saturday 27th: National Theater: dance companies from Spain and United Kingdom, Mexico and Finland. Monday … Continue reading

Panama Early Republic Painting

Panama Casco Viejo Gathering material for the upcoming patriot holidays in Panama (pretty much all November), I came across this photo.  The painting seems to be from the early Republic days, and depicts Panama as a beautiful lady holding a primitive version of the Panamanian flag.  Poetic license has been applied in many aspects of the representation, but still loved the elegance of it all!

Together we dance: Conservatorio, Rotary Club, Aprojusan and La Tribu Performance

Panama Casco Viejo Did you ever see that TV show called “Connections 2000” where they started with something simple like jelly and ended up linking it to solar panels?. I did and loved it. In a way, working and living in Casco is a little bit like that, there is a story behind most things (specially the interesting ones) that link to one another and to the whole. Here is a recent example: our first experimental theater space. This space is at the Santa Familia Community Center, where you can see a professional dance group called The Tribu Performance.  To … Continue reading

“Pequeños Gigantes” Feature Kid from Fundacion Calicanto`s Dance Program in Casco Viejo

Panama Casco Viejo “Pequeños Gigantes” (Little Giants) is a popular Panamanian TV talent Show,, where kids compete in teams and are viewed by thousands of people.  For many, it is a dream, and to get there, an amazing effort. This week`s competition had a very special member: José Garrido, a student of Enlaces, Fundacion Calicanto`s dance program. José, like many of the students in the program, lives in Chorrillo, an area known for extreme poverty and social problems. Through Enlaces, Jose has developed his talents and strengthen his education at normal school, while keeping away from being at risk in … Continue reading

Casco Viejo at Travel + Leisure November Magazine

Panama Casco Viejo Big article about Casco Viejo coming out on Travel and Leisure November issue! Very well written, the piece is by Stephen Drucker. Check it out here: CASCO VIEJO: Panama`s up and coming district This is my favorite part: “It’s just three avenues wide and nobody uses addresses. Architecturally encyclopedic, designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997, it could easily be the setting for the next photo series by Robert Polidori. It’s erotic like Havana, moldering like New Orleans, world-weary like Cuernavaca, Mexico, and just dangerous enough, like Miami’s South Beach in its early years—all of this … Continue reading
