Infrastructure works begin in Casco Viejo

Casco Viejo, Panama, Casco Antiguo Today, the government started to work on changing some of Casco`s sewage pipes and organizing electric cables and communication cables so that they are underground.  The street will be fixed after this along with the sidewalks on those areas. The works will cover most of A Avenue and 9th street which is the main entrance to Las Bovedas, and then a piece near the Presidential Palace and the Cathedral Plaza. These four areas at a cost of $39 million dollars. While the community in general agrees that most of this work is necessary, they are … Continue reading

Barza vs Real Madrid = Casco Viejo Madness

Panama Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo I really can´t tell why. Why do we care so very much about either Barza or the Real Madrid. I mean, after all, we are in Panama. Is it because we were a Spanish colony? don´t think so.  But we love them, and depending on which street you are in Casco Viejo you are either a Barza fan or a Real Madrid addict. We were peacefully sitting at our Arco office, which happens to be steps away from a sports bar. At some point we heard this incredible screaming, like a pack of howler monkeys … Continue reading

Music spreads the seeds of social change in Casco Viejo, Panama

Casco Antiguo, Panama, Casco Viejo When Conservatorio S. A. , a Casco Viejo developer and a Global Vision Award winner, donated free space to the Danilo Perez Foundation to create their music school in Panama,  they had a clear idea of what they wanted.  Conservatorio had been looking for a way to raise the bar of the neighborhood with the local neighbors, a vision that they were glad to find out was shared by Danilo Perez, whose main objective was (and is) to create social change through music.  Kids under his tutelage were turning out to be fantastic, they only … Continue reading

Century Old Businesses of Panama

Casco Viejo, Panama, Casco Antiguo   I came across a while ago with the Spanish edition of The Economist, which normally gathers news of LatinAmerica (mostly focused on Central America, actually).  They ran an entire edition on companies that were more than a 100 years old, and Panama had featured two of them: the licor factory Varela Hermanos (103 years old) and the department store Felix B. Maduro (135 years old). The Felix B. Maduro store was actually born in Casco Viejo in 1877 (we were part of Colombia back then), and it was called “Maduro & Company”. Founded by … Continue reading

Jazz Fest Panama 2012 Photos at Casco Viejo

Panama Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo   On Saturday, Casco Viejo got flooded with wonderful music and music lovers.  Musicians included Tito Puente Jr, side by side with Panamanian students from the Danilo Perez Foundation.  When the festival started years ago (is it eight already?) they presented young talents that were just starting to receive education at the Foundation such as Milagros (see photo, already a teenager).  She must have been around five years old.   On Saturday, some of them already graduating, they presented a beautiful show along kids from well known music schools such as Berkley. What I love … Continue reading

Panama Jazz Fest Gala at Casco Viejo

Panama Casco Viejo Last night, the Panama Jazz Festival started its four day musical celebration with a wonderful Gala night at the National Theatre.   Several artists performed, most looking forward to see Omaira Portuondo and Chucho Valdés from Cuba.   But as we always like to remind jazz lovers and attendants to these events, there is so much more to the Jazz Fest than the event itself! The true core of the Panama Jazz Festival is its educational component. Year round the Danilo Perez Foundation works hard to elevate Panama`s jazz education and to open the doors of the art world … Continue reading
